The cable car
You are on the line, not near it
Both Powell lines — Powell–Hyde and Powell–Mason — begin at the turnaround at Powell and Market, half a block downhill from the door. They have run up this street since 1888, and they are still a working part of the transport system rather than a ride.
Powell–Hyde climbs over Nob Hill and Russian Hill and puts you at the top of Lombard Street's crooked block and then at Aquatic Park. Powell–Mason goes over the hill to North Beach and Fisherman's Wharf. Queues at the turnaround are long in the middle of the day; walking two or three stops up Powell and boarding there usually is not.

BART and Muni at the end of the street
Powell Street station is on the same block: BART east under the bay to Oakland and Berkeley, or south all the way to SFO without changing — and Muni Metro to the ballpark, the Castro and the Sunset.
