Read this before you book
The hotel currently has no guest rooms designated as accessible, and no accessible parking. That is the honest position of a building put up in 1913, and we would rather you knew it now than discovered it at the door.
If you need a step-free route, an accessible bathroom, a roll-in shower, grab rails, a particular bed height, or a room close to the lift, please call us on (415) 225-6600 before booking. We will tell you exactly what the building can and cannot do for you, and if the answer is that we are not the right hotel, we will say so rather than take the booking.
This website
This site is built to meet WCAG 2.1 Level AA. That is a commitment about how it is built, not a badge we bought.
- Colour contrast is measured, not guessed. Every text and background pair here has been checked against the 4.5:1 ratio the standard requires for body text. The brand vermilion measures 3.44:1 on our page background, so it is never used for body text on a light ground — a darker version of the same hue carries the links instead, and the values are recorded in the stylesheet so a future change cannot quietly break them.
- Everything works from the keyboard. There is a skip link, focus is always visible, and no control is reachable only with a mouse. The menu is an ordinary HTML control, not a scripted widget.
- The site works with JavaScript disabled. Every page here is plain HTML. Nothing depends on script to function, including the navigation.
- Every page has one
<h1>and a heading structure you can navigate by. - Images have alt text, and decorative images are marked so screen readers skip them.
- Targets are at least 48px, so they can be hit without precision.
- Motion respects your system setting. If you have asked your device to reduce motion, transitions here stop.
- There is no CAPTCHA anywhere on this site.
- No embedded map, and no third-party scripts. Map links open in the application you already use and have already configured.
We have deliberately not installed an accessibility overlay widget. Overlays tend to interfere with the assistive technology people already use and configure, and they do not fix the underlying markup. We would rather build the page correctly.
The building
The hotel occupies a six-storey building from 1913, and that shapes what is possible.
- There is one lift serving all six floors. When it is out of service there is no second lift, only stairs.
- No guest room is designated as accessible. Bathroom layouts, door widths and thresholds vary room to room, because the building was not built to a plan that expected them to match.
- There is no car park and no accessible parking space. The nearest public garages are the Union Square Garage and the Ellis-O’Farrell Garage.
- The front desk is staffed 24 hours, so there is always someone to ask.
- Service animals are welcome throughout and are exempt from any pet restriction, in accordance with the ADA.
- Powell Street outside is on a grade, with cable car tracks in the roadway. The flatter approach to the door is from the Market Street end.
We are working through what can be improved in a building of this age and this protection, and we will say so on this page as things change rather than in a press release.
Tell us where we have got it wrong
If something on this site or in the hotel does not work for you, we want to know — including things this page claims are fine.
Call (415) 225-6600 Email reservations@unionsquarehotelsf.com
Please tell us the page or the part of the hotel, what happened, and what you were using. We aim to respond within two business days, and we will tell you what we are going to do rather than only acknowledging the message.
